FC Basel’s Jonas Adjetey Adjei has been called up to replace the injured Alexander Djiku in Ghana’s squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Djiku suffered a thigh injury during a league match for Fenerbahce on Friday, prompting head coach Otto Addo to make the necessary replacement.
Adjetey, a 20-year-old defender, is set to join the Black Stars for the first time as they gear up for crucial matches against Angola and Niger.
His football journey began at Teshie Football Academy, followed by stints with Accra Great Olympics and Berekum Chelsea, before securing a move to FC Basel.
This season, Adjetey has been a key player for Basel, featuring in all six of their Swiss Super League matches. His consistent performances have earned him a spot in the national team, and he is expected to join the Black Stars camp on Monday to start preparations.
Ghana is scheduled to face Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on September 5, followed by a trip to Berkane, Morocco, to take on Niger on September 9.
