Ghana’s U17 side, the Black starlets suffered a 3-1 defeat to their Russian counterparts in the UEFA U16 International Tournament in Zenit on Wednesday afternoon.
The defeat is the first to be suffered by the team under Laryea Kingston since he assumed the role of head coach for the Black Starlets.
Despite dominating possession in both halves, Laryea’s side will blame themselves for not taking their chances against an efficient Russian side.
The game kicked off with an explosive start when Vadim Shilov of Russia scored just four minutes into the match, sparking jubilation among Russian supporters. This early goal set the stage for Russia’s fast-paced passing game in the first half.
Shilov continued to make an impact by confidently converting a penalty in the 30th minute, increasing Russia’s lead to 2-0. The Russian team’s dominance persisted as Zakhar Chushkin scored another goal just three minutes later, putting Russia comfortably ahead 3-0.
Despite being three goals down, the Black Starlets showed resilience and determination, refusing to give up. Their efforts paid off when Ernest Ofori, who came off the bench, scored a consolation goal for the Ghanaian side in the 64th minute, injecting hope into their performance.
Throughout the game, the Black Starlets demonstrated their skill in ball possession, controlling both halves of the match. This showcased the potential of the Ghanaian team as they prepare for the upcoming WAFU Zone B U17 tournament in Ghana next month.
