Stephen Appiah, a former member of the Black Stars, has announced his candidacy as an independent contestant in the upcoming December 2024 elections.
Appiah intends to vie for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency seat, as revealed by Fiifi Tackie, a close friend who serves as the spokesperson for the Ayew family.

In his bid for office, Appiah faces competition from incumbent Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the NPP and the well-regarded John Dumelo, who is running on the NDC ticket.
Appiah’s decision to enter politics comes after a distinguished career in football.
He is best known for captaining the Black Stars, leading them to their debut World Cup appearance in Germany in 2006 and securing qualification for the tournament again in South Africa in 2010.
Throughout his career, he represented Ghana at various levels, from youth to senior, and played for renowned clubs such as Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League, as well as Udinese, Parma, Brescia, Juventus, Fenerbahçe, Cesena, and Vojvodina.
During his time with the national team, Appiah made 67 appearances and scored 15 goals, leaving an indelible mark on Ghanaian football history.
