Solar Ayew, the uncle of Jordan and Andre Ayew has insisted the Black Stars captaincy is not for the Ayew family.
The Ayew family has produced several top players including Abedi Pele and his sons Andre, Jordan and Rahim Ayew, as well as Solar Ayew, who is Pele’s sibling.
Abedi Pele, who won the UEFA Champions League with Marseille captained the Black Stars during his playing days whiles his son, Andre Ayew is currently the leader of the national team.
Black Stars coach Otto Addo on Wednesday announced his list of 26 players for the 2026 World Cup qualifying games against Mali and Central Africa Republic which excludes captain Andre Ayew from the squad.
This decision comes as a surprise to Andre Ayew following a great performance in the just-ended season with French Side Le Harvre, scoring six goals as his club secured their place in the French Ligue 1.
Responding to the news on Andre regarding the captaincy, Solar Ayew said,
“For Ghana, anything can happen. I can’t say they want to strip Andre Ayew off the captaincy but I think the coach has one or two reasons for his exclusion”
“The Black Stars captaincy is not for the Ayew family, it’s for Ghana. We can lose the captaincy but we are still having the football in our family. The captaincy is not ours but the football is there. You can take everything from us but you cannot take away the football. We have young ones coming so we are not worried at all” he told Asempa FM.
Ayew has made a record 120 appearances and scored 24 goals for Ghana.
