GBC only wrote to the Ghana Football Association requesting for rights to run radio commentary – Dr Randy Abbey

A member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council, Dr. Randy Abbey,  has confirmed that there are currently no negotiations between the GFA and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) regarding broadcast rights for the Ghana Premier League.

After a week long of speculation that GBC, a state-owned broadcaster, has acquired there broadcast right to telecast the GPL for the next five years in a 2.5 million dollars deal.

The GFA announced StarTimes as the official broadcaster for both the GPL and the MTN FA Cup in 2019 after a series of meetings and negotiation with both GBC and Startimes which sees Startimes as the ultimate partners to do so.

Dr. Abbey clarified that while discussions with StarTimes about renewing their broadcasting contract are ongoing, GBC has not been granted TV rights.

“I am not aware of anything with GBC. The only thing I am aware of is GBC writing to the GFA requesting for rights to run radio commentary” he told Joy Sports.

“They [StarTimes] are yet to honour, so the contract is ended and there are outstanding issues from the previous one. We’ve been engaging.”
