Ghana’s Black Princesses started their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup journey with a disappointing 2-1 loss against Austria in their Group E opener on Monday evening.
The game which started with an instant midfield battle, see Austria gained control and eventually see them score the first goal on 12th minutes of action through a lovely header from striker Hannah Frankhauser.
Ghana tried to score with a clear goal scoring opportunity just before the end of first half, but Jennifer failed to convert from a sweet cross Abdulai Salamatu.
On the 71st minutes, Austria was awarded a penalty which midfielder Nicole Ojukwu converted to double their lead to 2-0.
Despite a cracker long range from skipper Stella Nyamekye on the 91st minute with 7 more minutes left to play, Ghana couldn’t secure a draw as they handed Austria their first victory in the history of the tournament.
The Black Princesses will aim to rectify their opening loss when they face Japan on September 5th in their next group stage match.
