🇬🇭 Black Stars Choose Rhode Island Base for 2026 World Cup Campaign

Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, will set up camp at Bryant University as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. The Rhode Island institution has been selected as the team’s official training base for the tournament.

Located in Smithfield, the university campus becomes the only confirmed World Cup base camp in the New England region so far. Its strategic location places Ghana within easy reach of one of their crucial group fixtures.

The campus sits approximately 30 minutes from Gillette Stadium, the venue for Ghana’s second Group L match against England on June 23. The short commute is expected to ease travel demands during what will be a tightly packed group-stage schedule.

Group L Fixtures
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. Their confirmed schedule is as follows:

June 17: Ghana vs Panama (Toronto)
June 23: Ghana vs England (Foxborough)
June 27: Ghana vs Croatia (Philadelphia)

The 2026 tournament will mark Ghana’s fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup. The nation’s most memorable run remains the historic quarterfinal finish at the 2010 finals in South Africa.

Bryant University’s inclusion in FIFA’s official base camp catalogue indicates that its facilities meet elite tournament standards. The site offers high-quality training pitches, medical support infrastructure and secure access to accommodation — all critical components for a high-performance World Cup campaign.

Jonathan Walker, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Sports Commission, highlighted the broader impact of hosting Ghana’s preparations. According to him, the initiative aims not only to support the team but also to inspire young athletes in the region through potential community engagement opportunities.

Beyond the competitive aspect, Ghana’s presence in Rhode Island is expected to strengthen connections with supporters across the northeastern United States while adding a community-driven element to their tournament preparations.

Local organisers are expected to formally outline details of Ghana’s base camp activities in the coming days as World Cup logistics continue to unfold.
