Romain Saïss Bids Farewell to International Football

Veteran defender Romain Saïss has officially stepped away from international football, bringing an end to a distinguished career with the Moroccan national team.

The 35-year-old centre-back shared the news in an emotional statement on social media on Tuesday, explaining that the decision followed deep thought and reflection.

“This chapter closes with immense emotion after careful reflection,” he wrote. “Representing my country has been the most beautiful chapter of my life.”

Saïss, who previously featured for Angers SCO and Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C., has battled persistent injury problems in recent seasons. His latest setback occurred during the Africa Cup of Nations, where he managed only 18 minutes in Morocco’s opening fixture against Comoros national football team before suffering a thigh injury.

The experienced defender had only recently returned from a lengthy 18-month spell on the sidelines, making his brief AFCON appearance a frustrating blow.

Saïss will be widely remembered for captaining Morocco to a historic semi-final finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the first time an African nation reached the last four of the tournament. Reflecting on that honour, he said.

“Wearing the colours of Morocco and becoming captain will forever remain the greatest privilege of my career. Every time I stepped onto the pitch, I felt not only responsibility but an indescribable pride.”

His retirement comes just three months before Morocco begin their next World Cup campaign, where they are scheduled to face Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.
