“The only thing I can say is that CAF has once again shown that there is no consistency in its decisions” – Hugo Broos

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has criticized the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for what he described as “a total lack of consistency” following the controversial decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

The March 17 ruling, which awarded the trophy to Morocco two months after the final, has sparked widespread debate. Broos acknowledged that Senegal’s walk-off in the final in Rabat violated competition rules but questioned the delay in CAF’s enforcement.

“The only thing I can say is that CAF has once again shown that there is no consistency in its decisions,” Broos said. “If you leave the pitch, it is a forfeit. Done. Finished. So in that direction, I can follow. The only thing is why you do not do it earlier, why you wait two months.”

Broos also drew on his past experiences with CAF’s judicial system, highlighting the six-month delay in a previous disciplinary case involving South African midfielder Teboho Mokoena over a yellow card issue that, in his view, should have been resolved within 24 hours.

The South African coach’s remarks underline growing frustration across African football over inconsistent and delayed disciplinary actions, raising questions about CAF’s credibility and the need for clearer timelines in governance.
