Otto Addo Exit: Inconsistency Overshadows World Cup Qualification

The Ghana Football Association has brought an end to Otto Addo’s second spell as head coach of the Ghana national team, with inconsistency ultimately proving decisive despite moments of promise.

While his tenure delivered a key milestone, qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the broader picture reflected a team that struggled to maintain form, particularly against stronger opposition.

Record paints mixed picture

Across 22 matches in his second stint, Addo recorded eight wins, five draws, and nine defeats. The Black Stars scored 35 goals and conceded 28, earning 29 points from a possible 66—an average of 1.32 points per game.

Those numbers highlight a side capable of flashes of quality but unable to sustain momentum over a longer period.

Highs and setbacks

One of the standout achievements of Addo’s tenure was guiding Ghana to the World Cup, with important victories over teams like Mali, Central African Republic, Madagascar, Comoros, and Chad.

However, the team struggled in more demanding fixtures, failing to secure wins against Nigeria, Sudan, Niger, and Angola, while also falling short in friendlies against Japan, South Korea, Austria national team, and Germany national team.

A major low point came with Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, raising early doubts about the team’s progress under his leadership.

Those concerns were amplified during the March international window, where a heavy defeat to Austria was followed by a 2-1 loss to Germany—results that exposed defensive vulnerabilities and a lack of cohesion.

Uncertain road ahead

With the World Cup fast approaching, Ghana now faces a crucial transition period. The Black Stars have been drawn into a competitive group alongside the Panama national football team, Croatia national football team, and the England national football team.

The GFA must now act swiftly to appoint a successor capable of stabilising the team and building momentum ahead of the tournament.

In the end, while Addo delivered qualification, inconsistency and missed targets defined his tenure—bringing his time in charge to a close.
