Ghana MP Ernest Norgbey: “Sacking Otto Addo Was Long Overdue”

Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Youth, Sports and Culture, Ernest Norgbey, has thrown his support behind the Ghana Football Association’s decision to part ways with Otto Addo, insisting the move should have been taken earlier.

The GFA recently dismissed Addo following a disappointing international window in which the Ghana national team suffered back-to-back defeats to the Austria national team and the Germany national team.

Reacting to the decision, Norgbey did not mince words, stating that the signs had been evident for some time.

“It is the right time for him to be sacked,” he said. “I don’t know the kind of hope the GFA had in him, looking at the performance of the team.”

According to the lawmaker, Ghana’s declining performances and tactical concerns made the decision inevitable, particularly as the team prepares for a major international tournament.

Addo’s second stint, which began in 2024, saw mixed results. While he guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he also failed to secure a place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations—an outcome widely viewed as a major setback.

His record during the period stood at eight wins, five draws, and nine defeats in 22 matches, reflecting the inconsistency that ultimately cost him his job.

With Ghana set to face Panama, Croatia, and England at the World Cup, attention now turns to the GFA’s next move as they seek a new head coach to steady the team.

Upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Wales in May will provide an early test for whoever takes over, as the Black Stars look to regain momentum ahead of the global showpiece.
