Uganda U-17 national football team booked their place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup after defeating Ghana U-17 national football team 8-7 on penalties following an intense 2-2 draw in Saturday’s playoff clash.
The Black Starlets made a bright start to the encounter and grabbed the opening goal inside the first ten minutes through Eric Gyamfi, who finished calmly to hand Ghana an early advantage.
Uganda gradually settled into the game and found their equaliser in the 34th minute when Owen Mukisa capitalised on pressure around Ghana’s defence to restore parity before halftime.
After the break, Ghana regained control of the contest and moved back in front through Latif Abdul Wunzalgu, whose strike in the 51st minute reignited hopes of qualification for the West Africans.
With time running out, Uganda increased the pressure and pushed aggressively for another equaliser as Ghana attempted to protect their narrow lead.
The East Africans eventually found the breakthrough deep into stoppage time after being awarded a penalty, which Arafat Ibanda converted to make it 2-2 and force the match into a dramatic penalty shootout.
Uganda showed remarkable composure from the spot, successfully converting all eight of their penalties through John Brian Owino, Henry Muhoozi, Abdulshakur Babi, Brian Olwa, Arafat Ibanda, Mujab Mbalire, Musa Suuna and Travor Mubiru.
Ghana’s hopes faded after Jacob Kpoeti missed his effort, allowing Uganda to seal a hard-fought victory and secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
The defeat brings Ghana’s campaign at the tournament to a painful end despite the Black Starlets producing several strong moments throughout the competition.
