Kwesi Nyantakyi has backed the Black Stars to defy expectations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting Ghana should never be underestimated on the global stage.
The former Ghana Football Association president made the comments as preparations continue for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where Ghana will compete in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
Despite concerns over Ghana’s recent performances in friendly matches, Nyantakyi believes the Black Stars are capable of surprising many people at the competition.
“As I told somebody yesterday, never write off any Ghana team,” he told the Daily Graphic.
According to him, Ghanaian teams often perform best when expectations are low and supporters begin to doubt their chances.
“The time that you have little faith in them is when they spring surprises,” he added while calling on Ghanaians to rally behind the national team.
The Black Stars are currently in Cardiff preparing for an international friendly against Wales as part of their final build-up toward the Mundial.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz has already named a provisional 28-man squad, with the final team expected to be announced before the tournament begins next month.
Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama before facing England and Croatia in what is expected to be a challenging group.
The four-time African champions will be aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
