“Football in Ghana is about blood and pride” — Antoine Semenyo’s mother urges diaspora parents

Antoine Semenyo’s mother, Dela Dzebu, has encouraged Ghanaian parents living abroad to help their children remain connected to their roots despite the pressures of growing up in the diaspora.

Dzebu shared her experiences at a Ghana Football Association programme in the UK aimed at identifying and monitoring talented players eligible to represent Ghana.

The mother of the Bournemouth striker admitted that raising children abroad comes with many challenges, especially when young footballers begin attracting interest from different national teams.

Despite those difficulties, she urged parents not to give up on teaching their children about their heritage and identity.

“You would feel proud to be part of the Ghanaian journey. Football in Ghana is about blood; it’s about pride, it’s about legacy, it’s about your roots,” she said.

Dzebu also described the emotional moment she watched her son represent Ghana for the first time, calling it one of the proudest experiences of her life.

“As a parent, what you feel when he wears his jersey for the first time and the crowd is roaring — you cannot put it into words. It’s amazing,” she added.

Antoine Semenyo has since established himself as a key player for the Black Stars and is expected to play an important role for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
