Ghana’s Black Queens have kept their hopes of reaching the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup alive after coming from behind to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in Casablanca on Thursday.
The Ivorians made a fast start and took the lead as early as the fourth minute, with Ines Konan converting from the penalty spot.
Ghana responded after the break and eventually found the equaliser through Princess Marfo, who struck in the 59th minute to bring the Black Queens level.
The comeback was completed in the 72nd minute when Josephine Bonsu calmly converted another penalty to put Ghana ahead for the first time in the contest.
The Black Queens showed composure during the closing stages to protect their advantage and secure a vital victory.
The win came in the WAFCON play-in, a stage introduced to determine the two African teams that will join the six-team preliminary round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Intercontinental Playoff Tournament.
Ghana’s victory means the Black Queens have taken another important step towards securing a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
After their quarter-final elimination at the WAFCON, the Black Queens have responded strongly when it mattered most and will now continue their fight for a return to the global stage.
