Ghanaian forward Jerry Afriyie made an impressive start to life at KRC Genk, providing an assist on his competitive debut as his side drew 4-4 with Royal Antwerp in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League on Saturday.
The 19-year-old attacker, who recently completed his move to Genk, came off the bench in the 69th minute with his team leading 3-1. He made an immediate impact, setting up Aaron Bibout for Genk’s fourth goal to further extend the visitors’ advantage.
Genk appeared to be heading for a comfortable away victory after goals from Josué Kongolo, Rafiu Durosinmi and Ayumu Yokoyama had put them in control. However, Antwerp launched a remarkable late comeback, with Eran Tuypens reducing the deficit before Michael Frey scored twice in quick succession to rescue a point for the hosts.
Despite Genk surrendering a three-goal lead, Afriyie’s personal contribution will be a major source of encouragement as he begins his journey with the Belgian club. His ability to make an impact shortly after coming on will also strengthen his case for more playing time in the coming fixtures.
Afriyie spent the 2025/26 season on loan at RAAL La Louvière, where he scored five goals and provided two assists in 34 appearances. He now returns to Genk hoping to build on that experience and establish himself in the Belgian top flight.
The forward, who turns 20 on August 24, has already made four appearances for the Ghana senior national team and scored on his international debut. With his Genk chapter now underway, Afriyie will be looking to turn his promising debut into a productive season.
