WAFU B hands 14 young referees platform to gain valuable experience at U17 Girls Cup

The West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B has given 14 young referees a valuable opportunity to gain international officiating experience when the WAFU B U17 Girls Cup takes place in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

The 14 teenage referees, drawn from the seven member associations of WAFU Zone B, will be the match officials at the competition, with two young officials selected from each member association. Their participation follows their successful training through the WAFU B Young Referees Course, held in Ghana in March this year, an initiative designed to identify, train and prepare the next generation of match officials in the sub-region.

The decision to give these young referees a platform at an international youth competition underlines WAFU B’s commitment to developing football beyond players and coaches. Rather than limiting their training to the classroom, the Zone is providing them with the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real competitive environment, where they can learn from experienced officials and gain valuable exposure.

For teenage referees, opportunities of this nature can be transformative. International competitions provide a level of experience that cannot be fully replicated through theoretical training alone. Being exposed to different teams, playing styles, match situations and the demands of international officiating will help the young officials build confidence, improve their decision-making and understand the responsibilities that come with being a referee.

WAFU B’s initiative also represents a forward-looking investment in the future of football in the region. Developing referees from a young age creates a pathway for talented officials to progress through the ranks and potentially represent the sub-region at major continental and international competitions in the years ahead. The experience gained in Yamoussoukro could therefore become an important first step in long and successful officiating careers.

By opening the doors of the U17 Girls Cup to these 14 young officials, WAFU B is sending a powerful message that development must include everyone who contributes to the game. The initiative provides the teenagers with an opportunity to learn, make mistakes, receive guidance and grow in a competitive environment, while giving the Zone a chance to identify and nurture refereeing talent for the future.
