Ghanaian coach Laryea Kingston will lead Uganda’s U20 national team into the 2026 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying tournament in Tanzania as he begins another important assignment with the East African nation’s junior teams.
Kingston, who serves as head coach of Uganda’s junior national teams, will be hoping to guide the Hippos through the qualifying competition and secure a place at next year’s U20 AFCON, which will be hosted by Ghana. Uganda have been drawn in Group B alongside Sudan and Djibouti, with the competition set to kick off on September 15, 2026.
The former Ghana international has already enjoyed success with Uganda’s youth setup after guiding the country’s U17 side to qualification for the 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup. The Ugandan youngsters secured their place at the global tournament after defeating Ghana in the playoff stage of the 2026 U17 AFCON qualifying competition.
Kingston will now turn his attention to the U20 team, with the objective of achieving another qualification feat and earning Uganda a place at the continental championship. Success in Tanzania would also give the coach the opportunity to lead a second Ugandan age-group side to a major international tournament.
For Kingston, the assignment represents another significant chapter in his coaching career since taking charge of Uganda’s junior national teams. His work with the country’s youth sides has already attracted attention following the U17 qualification, and the U20 qualifiers provide another opportunity to demonstrate his approach to developing and preparing young players for international football.
With the U20 AFCON scheduled to be staged in Ghana next year, Kingston and Uganda will be determined to navigate Group B successfully and keep their qualification ambitions alive. The Ghanaian coach will be looking to replicate the success achieved with the U17 side as Uganda begin their latest campaign on the road to the continental showpiece.
