Ghanaian coach Laryea Kingston continued his impressive run with Uganda’s junior national teams after guiding the Uganda U20 side to a 1-0 victory over Sudan in the CECAFA U20 AFCON Qualifying Tournament in Tanzania.
The victory secured Uganda’s place in the semi-finals of the competition, with Kingston’s side maintaining their perfect start to the tournament after also defeating Djibouti 4-1 in their opening Group B fixture.
Uganda produced another disciplined performance against Sudan, with the lone goal proving enough to seal all three points and confirm their progression from the group. The result underlines the growing impact of Kingston’s work with Uganda’s youth teams since his appointment as head coach of the country’s junior national sides.
Kingston is now eyeing another major qualification success with Uganda after already guiding the country’s U17 side to the 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup. The Ugandan U17s secured their ticket after defeating Ghana in the playoff of the 2026 U17 AFCON qualifying competition.
The former Ghana international has now guided the U20 side into the knockout stage of the CECAFA tournament, with Uganda one step closer to securing qualification for next year’s U20 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Ghana.
Kingston and his young Ugandan charges will be hoping to maintain their momentum and complete another successful qualification campaign following their qualification into the semi-final.
A strong finish in Tanzania would further enhance the Laryea’s growing reputation for producing results at the youth level with Uganda.
