FC Samartex 1996 claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory over defending champions Medeama SC at the Nsenkyire Arena on Sunday, ending the visitors’ unbeaten start to the Ghana Premier League season.
The contest remained goalless at half-time, but Samartex broke the deadlock nine minutes after the restart when Joshuah Fuseini scored in the 54th minute to put the home side ahead.
Medeama responded strongly and looked to have secured a point when Dominic Amponsah equalised in the 79th minute. The goal brought the visitors back into the contest and appeared to have set up a draw between the two sides.
However, Samartex had the final say in a tense finish. Christian Agyenim struck three minutes into stoppage time to restore the hosts’ lead and seal all three points, sparking celebrations at the Nsenkyire Arena.
The result marked Medeama’s first league defeat of the campaign after seven matches, bringing an end to their unbeaten run. Despite the setback, the Tarkwa-based club remain top of the standings with 14 points, holding the position on goal difference.
Samartex’s victory takes them level with Medeama on 14 points, placing them firmly among the early contenders near the top of the table. Hearts of Oak also have 14 points after seven matches, leaving the three clubs level as the race at the summit tightens.
For Samartex, the late winner represents an important result against the reigning champions, while Medeama will look to respond in their next fixture as they seek to maintain their position at the top.
