Ampem Darkoa Ladies defeat Edo Queens to qualify for 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League

Ampem Darkoa Ladies have secured qualification for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League after defeating Nigeria’s Edo Queens 3-2 in the continuation of the WAFU Zone B qualifying final in Egypt on Thursday.

Afishata Mohammed proved decisive for the Ghanaian champions, rising highest to head home from a corner kick and seal victory in a fiercely contested encounter that resumed following a ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The victory sends Ampem Darkoa to the continental showpiece after a lengthy dispute over the original final, which was played on September 5, 2026, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The two sides had played out a 2-2 draw during regulation time before Edo Queens won the subsequent penalty shootout. However, Ampem Darkoa challenged the outcome, leading to a review by CAF.

Following decisions issued on September 26 and October 16, the governing body upheld the appeal and nullified the penalty-shootout result, directing that the match resume from the beginning of extra time with the score still level at 2-2.

The continuation was moved to Egypt, where Ampem Darkoa and Edo Queens were given another opportunity to determine the winner on the pitch. The resumed fixture was scheduled to feature two 15-minute periods of extra time, with penalties to follow if the teams remained level.

Ampem Darkoa, who arrived in Cairo ahead of the decisive encounter, made their opportunity count as Mohammed’s crucial header proved the difference, handing the Ghanaian side a 3-2 victory on aggregate across the completed match and its continuation.

The triumph marks an important achievement for the Ghana Women’s Premier League champions, who have now emerged from a challenging qualification campaign to secure their place among Africa’s leading women’s club sides.

Edo Queens, meanwhile, saw their hopes of progressing through the WAFU Zone B qualifying final ended by the Ghanaian side’s decisive performance in Egypt.

With qualification secured, Ampem Darkoa will remain in Egypt for the main CAF Women’s Champions League tournament, where they will represent Ghana against some of the continent’s strongest women’s clubs.

The victory provides a significant boost to Ghanaian women’s football, with Ampem Darkoa now preparing to carry the country’s hopes into Africa’s premier women’s club competition.
