John Paintsil Urges Full Fitness for Black Stars Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Black Stars assistant coach John Paintsil has emphasised the need for a fully fit squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, warning that injuries could significantly affect Ghana’s chances.

With less than four months to the tournament, concerns remain over the condition of some key players. Mohammed Kudus is currently sidelined, while Francis Abu and Mohammed Salisu are also set to miss the competition due to injury.

There is, however, some relief for the technical team as Abdul Mumin has regained full fitness after a lengthy spell out.

Speaking to 3Sports, Paintsil stressed that player availability will be crucial to Ghana’s campaign.

“When it comes to the World Cup, Ghana is now experienced. We’ve reached the round of 16 in 2006 and the quarter-finals in 2010,” he said.

He added that expectations are understandably high, but the team must have all its key players ready.

“Coming into this World Cup, the expectation is very high. I can’t wait to see how things will go for us. Like I keep saying, I want all our players to be fit so they will be ready for the call-up.”

Head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his final squad on June 1 as anticipation continues to build among supporters.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England six days later, and conclude their group matches against Croatia on June 27.

As part of preparations, the team will regroup in March for international friendlies against Austria and Germany, before wrapping up their build-up with a test against Mexico in May.

The technical team will be hoping injuries do not derail their plans as Ghana aim to make another strong statement on football’s biggest stage.
