Ghanaian winger Abdul Fatawu made his Premier League debut as Ipswich Town opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Portman Road.
Fatawu was handed a starting role by Ipswich and played 66 minutes before being substituted, putting in an encouraging performance on his first appearance in England’s top flight with his new club.
The 22-year-old joined Ipswich from Leicester City on July 21, 2026, signing a five-year contract in a deal reportedly worth an initial £20 million. He showed his attacking qualities against Sunderland, completing all three of his attempted dribbles, creating one big chance and recording two key passes.
Ipswich took the lead in the 24th minute when Julio Enciso intercepted a pass before setting up fellow new signing Emersonn, who finished from close range. Sunderland responded six minutes before half-time through Nilson Angulo, whose curling free-kick restored parity.
With the game heading towards a draw, former Sunderland winger Jack Clarke produced the decisive moment in the 90th minute, firing a low effort into the far corner to give Ipswich all three points.
The result gives Ipswich a winning start to their return to the Premier League after finishing second in the Championship last season. For Fatawu, the performance marks the beginning of a new chapter as he looks to establish himself as an important player for the newly promoted side.
