Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor says his side is embracing the growing tension in the Kenyan Premier League title chase, insisting the pressure from arch-rivals AFC Leopards will only sharpen his team’s focus.
K’Ogalo strengthened their hold on first place with an emphatic 3-0 triumph over KCB at the iconic Nyayo Stadium on Sunday. The victory restored their six-point advantage at the top after Leopards had briefly reduced the gap with a 2-1 success against Posta Rangers a day earlier.
Reflecting on the mounting expectations, Akonnor admitted that the battle for supremacy naturally brings anxiety but stressed that his squad is mentally equipped to cope.
“In football, pressure is part of the game. It’s something we welcome because it pushes you to stay sharp,” he noted. “At this stage, it comes down to mentality. The side that keeps its composure and consistency will have the edge.”
Gor Mahia sit top of the table with 46 points from 21 outings, while AFC Leopards remain in pursuit on 40 points and still have a match to play.
Akonnor believes the progress made in recent months has strengthened his team’s belief. According to the former Ghana international, the squad’s maturity and improved understanding on the pitch have eliminated earlier concerns.
“Some months back, there were areas we needed to improve, but now the players show confidence in possession and clarity in their roles,” he explained.
He also commended his team’s display against KCB, pointing to their intensity and disciplined execution of the game plan.
“We approached the match with aggression and focus. We limited their opportunities and controlled the tempo effectively,” he added.
With five decisive encounters left — including clashes against Ulinzi Stars, Shabana, Tusker FC and Kariobangi Sharks — the championship race remains finely poised.
However, Akonnor is confident his side possesses the resilience and determination required to maintain their momentum and see out the campaign on top.
