All to Play For: Nations FC Return Home Chasing 1:0 Deficit

Nations FC’s historic debut on the continental stage got off to a testing start on Saturday, as the Ghanaian FA Cup holders slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Mali’s FC Diarra in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round tie.

Staged at the Stade Mamadou Konaté, the tightly contested fixture remained deadlocked through a tense opening forty-five minutes, with both sides failing to break down each other’s defenses.

However, the momentum shifted shortly after the restart. The hosts capitalized on an opening in the 55th minute, netting what proved to be the match-winning goal to secure a precious advantage ahead of the return fixture.

In response, the Ghanaian visitors threw numbers forward in search of an away equalizer, but FC Diarra’s backline stood resolute to preserve their clean sheet on home soil.

The defeat leaves Nations FC with a slender deficit to overturn when the two sides lock horns again for the second leg in Ghana on Sunday, September 13. Fresh off their triumph in the 2025/26 MTN FA Cup, the debutants will need a roaring home crowd and a sharp turnaround to keep their maiden continental journey alive.

Should Nations FC manage to reverse the scoreline on home turf, they will advance to the second preliminary round, where a clash against the winner of the tie between Niger’s AS Zam and Burkina Faso’s ASKO de Kara awaits.
