Former Black Stars captain André Ayew has explained why he remained without a club for a period following the expiration of his contract with French Ligue 1 side Le Havre.
According to Ayew, personal commitments in Ghana prevented him from signing with a new club immediately after his contract ended.
🗣️ “When I was in Ghana, I was quite busy with some personal matters, and that’s why I didn’t sign earlier,” he said.
The former Black Stars skipper further revealed that familiarity within his new club’s setup played a key role in his eventual decision. Ayew explained that knowing his Ghanaian teammates Dennis Odoi and Kamal Sowah were already at the club encouraged him to speak directly with the club’s recruitment officials.
🗣️ “When my agent told me about the offer, and knowing Dennis and Kamal were already here, I spoke with the head of scouting and the sporting director. The discussions didn’t take long,” Ayew explained.
He added that the football project, the vision of the club, and the city itself convinced him to accept the challenge, noting that he had long been familiar with the club through conversations with former teammate Matthew Amoah during their time together with the national team.
🗣️ “The project, the ideas, the city, and my past knowledge of the club made the decision easy. I had other offers, but when I looked at the challenge I was seeking, I felt this was the right place,” Ayew said via ESPN UK.
Now 36 years old, Ayew has featured in six matches since joining the club, starting once and averaging 34 minutes per game so far this season.
