Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren is confident Ghana can begin their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with victory when they face tournament debutants Cape Verde in their Group C opener.
The Black Queens will take on Cape Verde on Wednesday, July 29, at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, with Björkegren insisting his side is fully prepared after weeks of intensive training ahead of the continental showpiece.
“We have been in camp for some weeks, and we have improved our fitness level, and we are feeling we are ready for the upcoming game,” the Swedish tactician said ahead of the clash.
While acknowledging the challenge posed by the WAFCON newcomers, Björkegren believes Ghana have what it takes to secure maximum points if they execute their game plan. “We expect a tough game, but we believe in ourselves, and if we do our things, we can start the tournament with a win. At least that’s our goal and target,” he added.
A positive result against Cape Verde would hand the Black Queens the ideal start to their WAFCON campaign as they pursue a place in the knockout stage and continue their quest to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, having last appeared on the global stage in 2007.
