Black Starlets Face Algeria in Tough Opening Clash at 2026 U-17 AFCON

Ghana’s Black Starlets will open their 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations journey with a tough Group D encounter against Algeria on Thursday evening in Rabat.

The two-time champions return to the continental competition determined to restore their status among Africa’s elite youth football nations. Ghana previously lifted the trophy in 1995 and 1999 and will once again carry the expectations of a football-loving nation.

Under the guidance of Prosper Narteh Ogum, the Black Starlets booked their place at the tournament following an impressive run during the WAFU B qualifiers, where they reached the final before suffering a narrow penalty defeat to Côte d’Ivoire.

Ahead of the opening fixture, Dr Ogum expressed confidence in his players, insisting the squad is mentally ready and motivated to face the challenge before them.

Group D has been widely viewed as one of the most competitive groups in the tournament, with defending champions Senegal and South Africa also battling for places in the knockout stages and qualification to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Despite the level of competition, the Ghana coach believes his players possess the discipline, mentality and quality needed to compete strongly against the continent’s best teams.

Ogum is anticipating a tactical battle against Algeria and has called on his side to stay organised while taking their scoring opportunities when they arrive.

The Black Starlets head into the match after several weeks of preparations in Morocco and will be eager to begin their AFCON campaign on a positive note.
