Berekum West MP Dickson Kyere-Duah has called for urgent action to save the Accra Sports Stadium, warning that Ghana could lose CAF’s goodwill if the facility’s deteriorating condition is not addressed.
Kyere-Duah made the comments after a joint inspection of the stadium involving the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Ghana Sports Fund Board and Members of Parliament. The inspection comes ahead of Ghana’s 2027 AFCON qualifiers, the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and the new Ghana Premier League season.
The MP believes the condition of the facility has reached a worrying stage and says authorities should consider rebuilding the stadium rather than continuing with repeated renovations. He recalled that CAF previously rejected the venue for Ghana’s international matches, forcing the country to explore options outside the country before eventually receiving approval to play in Accra.
“CAF has been charitable to us, but I don’t think they will be charitable this time around if we leave the facility in this state,” he warned.
Kyere-Duah is therefore urging the government and sports authorities to begin discussions on the long-term future of the stadium before Ghana risks losing the opportunity to host major international fixtures.
The Accra Sports Stadium has undergone several upgrades over the years, but renewed concerns about its condition have placed pressure on authorities to take decisive action ahead of Ghana’s upcoming domestic and continental football commitments.
