Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi continued his impressive start to life at Coventry City, providing an assist as the Sky Blues defeated Plymouth Argyle 4-2 to progress to the next round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.
Yirenkyi started the Round of 64 tie and made an immediate impact, setting up Taiwo Awoniyi for Coventry’s opener just three minutes into the game. The hosts doubled their advantage only two minutes later through Jack Rudoni.
Plymouth responded in the 21st minute when Oliver Irow pulled one back, but Coventry maintained their 2-1 advantage going into the break.
The visitors completed their comeback early in the second half when Xavier Amaechi equalised in the 54th minute. Coventry, however, regained control and restored their lead through Ephron Mason-Clark in the 67th minute.
Victor Torp then converted from the penalty spot in the 78th minute to give Coventry a 4-2 lead and effectively put the tie beyond Plymouth.
Yirenkyi’s early assist once again highlighted his attacking contribution, as the Ghanaian continues to settle into life at Coventry following his move to the Premier League newcomers.
The victory sends Coventry City into the next round of the EFL Cup, while Plymouth Argyle’s campaign comes to an end.
