Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has offered his heartfelt support to victims of the devastating floods in Accra, saying the national team stands with every family affected as Ghana prepares for its crucial FIFA World Cup knockout match against Colombia.
Severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall claimed at least 12 lives and displaced thousands across parts of the capital, prompting an outpouring of sympathy from across the country.
Speaking from the Black Stars training base, Queiroz admitted the tragic events at home had weighed heavily on the minds of the players and technical staff despite their preparations for Saturday’s Round of 32 encounter.
“To the families who have lost loved ones, those who have been displaced from their homes, we are with you,” Queiroz said.
“The images and reports from home are heartbreaking and even though we are here preparing for our game against Colombia, our thoughts haven’t left Ghana.”
“We are one family. When Accra suffers, we all suffer.”
The Portuguese coach’s message comes as the Black Stars intensify preparations for their first knockout match of the tournament, with hopes of reaching the Round of 16 for the first time since the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana has announced a GH¢35 million relief package to support victims and assist communities affected by the floods.
Ghana will face Colombia in Kansas City on July 3, with the Black Stars hoping to deliver a performance that can provide a moment of joy for Ghanaians during a difficult period back home.
