Black Stars goalkeepers’ coach Fatawu Dauda believes character not just talent is the reason Benjamin Asare has developed into one of Ghana’s most dependable shot-stoppers.
The 33-year-old Hearts of Oak captain has grown into a commanding presence in goal and currently holds the first-choice role for the senior national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Dauda, speaking in an interview with 3Sports, disclosed that his relationship with Asare goes beyond matchday observations. The former Ghana international explained that he regularly engages the goalkeeper in detailed discussions about performances, mindset and leadership.
According to Dauda, the difference lies in Asare’s willingness to accept correction.
“Goalkeeping is my department, so I monitor him closely. After games we talk, we analyse situations and share ideas. I don’t just focus on technique — I also speak to him about handling pressure and responsibility. He’s a captain and a goalkeeper, and that combination demands mental strength. Criticism comes with the role, but he accepts feedback and works on it. That attitude is why he keeps improving.”
Asare’s recent performances have reinforced that progress. He played a decisive role in Hearts of Oak’s victory over Asante Kotoko, producing key interventions to preserve the result in a high-stakes encounter.
Statistically, Hearts boast one of the tightest defences in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, conceding just seven goals so far. Individually, Asare has featured in 12 matches and allowed only four league goals — numbers that underline his consistency.
With Hearts sitting second in the standings and the Black Stars building momentum toward international assignments, Asare’s composure and growth appear to be arriving at exactly the right time.
