The journey from the local pitches of Berekum to the grand stages of European football reached a significant milestone on Sunday afternoon, as Ghanaian centre-back Rockson Yeboah officially marked his debut in the Spanish LaLiga for Osasuna.
Despite the personal pride of stepping onto the pitch at the Mendizorroza, the 22-year-old’s maiden appearance was soured by a heavy 5-2 defeat at the hands of Deportivo Alavés.
Introduced at the hour mark in place of Flavien Boyomo, Yeboah anchored the defence for the final thirty minutes, though a collective defensive collapse meant it was a baptism of fire for the new signing.
Yeboah’s path to Spain is a testament to perseverance and rapid development. Having started his footballing education in Ghana with spells at Bec-Tero FC, Techiman United, and Young African Promises, the defender caught the eye of scouts abroad, leading to a move to AEK Athens in 2023 where he honed his craft in Greece’s second tier.
His stock skyrocketed following a subsequent transfer to Swedish giants IFK Göteborg in August 2024. Over 44 appearances in Scandinavia, the towering 1.90m defender showcased elite physical traits—including raw speed clocked at nearly 35 km/h—attracting intense interest across the continent.
That trajectory culminated last month when Osasuna splashed 3 million Euros to secure his services on a five-year contract tied down by a 30 million Euro release clause.
Reflecting on his baptism in Spanish football, Yeboah acknowledged the bitter-sweet nature of the afternoon. While the defeat stung and the team failed to hit their expected heights, the reality of playing in one of Europe’s premier leagues remains a dream realized.
The young defender will not have to wait long for a shot at redemption. Osasuna return to the fortress of El Sadar on September 12 to lock horns with Espanyol, offering Yeboah a prime opportunity to taste his first home action in front of the club’s passionate supporters and help steer the team back to winning ways.
