The Ghana Football Association has officially dismissed Otto Addo as head coach of the Ghana national team, ending his second stint in charge following the team’s 2-1 defeat to Germany national team in Stuttgart.
The decision comes after a disappointing March international window, where Ghana suffered a heavy 5-1 loss to Austria national team before falling again to Germany, raising serious concerns ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
An emergency meeting involving FA officials and the Sports Ministry, led by Kofi Adams, was held shortly after the Germany match, with a final decision reached swiftly.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, the FA confirmed the move:
“The Ghana Football Association has parted ways with Head Coach Otto Addo, effective immediately.”
“We thank him sincerely for his service and wish him the best in his future endeavours.”
Addo’s second spell began in 2024 but was marked by inconsistency. While he successfully guided Ghana to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he also failed to secure a place at the 2025 AFCON, a major setback for the national team.
Recent performances ultimately proved decisive, with defensive weaknesses and lack of cohesion casting doubt over the team’s readiness for the global stage.
Across his second tenure, Addo recorded eight wins, five draws, and nine defeats in 22 matches. His earlier stint saw him lead Ghana to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the team exited at the group stage.
His departure means he will not lead the Black Stars at the upcoming tournament, where Ghana are set to face Panama, Croatia, and England.
With friendlies against Mexico and Wales scheduled in May, the GFA is now under pressure to appoint a new coach quickly and restore stability ahead of the World Cup.
