Ghana national football team have confirmed an international friendly against Mexico national football team in May as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The confirmation follows earlier indications that Mexico had expressed interest in facing the Black Stars as part of their final build-up to the global showpiece. The match is expected to provide both teams with an important opportunity to evaluate players ahead of the tournament.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Ghana Football Association announced that the friendly would serve as a key assessment platform for players in contention for World Cup selection.
🗣️ “Ghana will play an international friendly against Mexico in May as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America,” the statement said.
“Both countries will use the match to further assess players eligible to represent them at the tournament.”
Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is expected to name a squad made up of a blend of locally based players, Europe-based professionals currently under close observation, as well as selected U-23 players involved in the Olympic Games qualifying cycle.
🗣️ “The squad will be composed of players who compete in the domestic league and European leagues being monitored by the technical team, alongside some U-23 players,” the FA added.
The friendly is scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2026, with the venue in Mexico yet to be confirmed. Mexico are also expected to face two additional opponents during the same international window as part of their final preparations.
The Mexico encounter brings Ghana’s World Cup warm-up schedule to three matches, following previously announced friendlies against Austria national football team and Germany national football team in March. Addo and his technical staff are expected to announce the squad for those European fixtures in the coming days.
