Ghanaian-American Congressman Gabriel Amo Welcomes Black Stars to Rhode Island Base for 2026 World Cup

Rhode Island lawmaker Gabriel Felix Kofi Amo has expressed immense pride after Ghana confirmed the Black Stars will set up camp in the Ocean State ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Ghana’s senior national team has chosen Bryant University as its training base as preparations intensify for matches to be played across the United States and Canada.

Congressman Amo, a Ghanaian-American who was born and raised in Rhode Island, described the decision as a special moment for both his heritage and his home state. Taking to social media, he revealed his excitement about welcoming the four-time African champions and hinted at his involvement in helping secure the arrangement.

“Thrilled that Team Ghana will call Rhode Island home at Bryant University for the 2026 World Cup. As a proud Ghanaian-American and lifelong Rhode Islander, I’m grateful to have played a part in bringing this opportunity to our state,” he wrote.

Amo, a native of Pawtucket, made history in 2023 when he was elected to represent Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Attention now shifts to Ghana’s ambitions on the pitch. The Black Stars are aiming for a strong showing at the global tournament, scheduled for June and July 2026.

Drawn into Group L, Ghana will compete against Panama, 1966 world champions England, and 2018 finalists Croatia. Their campaign begins against Panama in Toronto on June 17, before a highly anticipated clash with England in Boston on June 23. The group stage concludes with a fixture against Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.

With a solid base secured and preparations underway, Ghana will be determined to make their presence felt on football’s biggest stage.
