“Ghanaians Have the Right to Know” — John Dramani Mahama Calls for Transparency in Sports Spending

President John Dramani Mahama has called for greater transparency and consistency in the disclosure of spending on sporting activities, stressing the need for accountability in the use of public funds.

He made the remarks during a fundraising event held at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City as the Ghana national football team step up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The President’s comments follow concerns raised by Kurt Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association, who recently criticised what he described as excessive scrutiny of the team’s budget.

Addressing stakeholders, Mahama emphasized that transparency is essential to maintaining trust and attracting investment into sports.

“Ghanaians have the right to know how their resources are being utilised, and corporate partners deserve transparency before they will agree to invest,” he stated.

He also praised Kofi Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, while urging authorities to sustain and improve financial reporting standards.

“I commend the Minister for Sports and Recreation to maintain this standard, but we need to be more consistent in releasing information about how much we spend as a country on our sporting activities,” he added.

The event brought together key stakeholders, including Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem, as discussions continue around funding and accountability in Ghanaian sports.

On the pitch, Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team and Panama national football team for the World Cup, which will be hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Black Stars will also face Austria national football team and Germany national football team in upcoming friendlies as part of their preparations.
