“I Learned to Be More Patient” – Panama Captain Aníbal Godoy Reflects on World Cup Growth Ahead of 2026

Aníbal Godoy says lessons from the 2018 FIFA World Cup have shaped his mindset as he prepares to lead Panama national football team into another global campaign.

The experienced midfielder, who featured in Panama’s historic debut in 2018, believes that exposure to elite-level football has made him a better and more composed player.

“I learned to be more patient and mentally prepared. At that level, everything is faster and more demanding—you must stay calm and focused,” he explained.

Now representing San Diego FC, Godoy is expected to play a key leadership role as Panama aim to exceed expectations in Group L of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
