Germany-born forward Ilyas Ansah has turned down the chance to represent Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, opting to continue his international development with Germany’s youth setup.
The 21-year-old striker, who plays for 1. FC Union Berlin, had been on the radar of the Ghana Football Association and Black Stars head coach Otto Addo as the team builds toward the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Despite the approach, Ansah says his immediate focus remains on his club and Germany’s Under-21 side.
“I’ve decided to soak up everything I’m currently experiencing at Union and continue playing for the German U21 team,” Ansah said.
The forward made it clear that he is not closing the door entirely on Ghana but prefers to delay any major international decision until after the European Under-21 Championship.
“After the U21 European Championship, I’ll look into it next year and make a decision,” he explained. “As things stand, I won’t be going to the World Cup with Ghana.”
Ansah has already made six appearances for Germany’s U21 team, scoring once, and remains determined to cement his place at Union Berlin while progressing through the German national ranks.
