Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol has admitted his side will need a different tactical approach when they face Ghana in their decisive Group L clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, warning that the Black Stars will be difficult to break down.
The Manchester City centre-back believes Ghana’s disciplined defensive display against England proved just how dangerous Carlos Queiroz’s side can be, even without dominating possession.
England were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw despite controlling the ball for long periods, with Ghana earning widespread praise for their organisation and resilience.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s encounter, Gvardiol said Croatia are expecting a similar challenge.
“Everything is much easier after a win. Now it would be best to continue like that, but we have a game ahead of us that won’t be easy,” he said.
The 23-year-old pointed to England’s struggles as evidence that Ghana are one of the toughest teams to break down at the tournament.
“England drew with them despite dominating possession and the overall play. It shows there are no easy games at this World Cup,” Gvardiol added.
He explained that teams have found it difficult to penetrate Ghana’s compact defensive structure and insisted Croatia must find new solutions if they are to secure victory.
“We can expect something similar against Ghana. We have to prepare properly, find a new approach and game plan, and hopefully we will be ready,” he said.
Croatia head into the match needing a positive result to boost their hopes of reaching the Round of 32, while Ghana know avoiding defeat could be enough to secure qualification, depending on the outcome of England’s meeting with Panama.
The winner of the encounter will take a significant step towards the knockout stage in what promises to be one of the decisive matches of Group L.
