Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has outlined ambitious objectives for Ghana at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), insisting his side is determined to lift the continental title while securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Swedish tactician made his intentions clear ahead of Ghana’s tournament opener against Cape Verde on Wednesday at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, revealing that the Black Queens have set three clear goals for the competition.
“We have three targets: qualify from the group stage, win the quarter-finals to qualify for the World Cup and go all the way to win the 2026 WAFCON,” Björkegren said.
Ghana heads into the tournament in confident mood after an encouraging preparation campaign in Morocco, capped by an emphatic 4-0 victory over Malawi in their final friendly. The Black Queens are hoping to improve on their third-place finish at the previous edition and challenge for their maiden WAFCON crown.
Reflecting on the team’s progress since taking charge, Björkegren praised the players for their development and believes the squad is capable of achieving something special. “We were happy with the bronze medal in the previous WAFCON. I think we did really well. When I came in, I took over a team that normally hadn’t performed really well in a long time,” he added.
Following their clash with Cape Verde, the Black Queens will face Cameroon on August 2 before concluding their Group A campaign against Mali on August 6, with a place in the semi-finals guaranteeing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
