Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has cautioned the Black Stars against underestimating Panama, describing the Group L opener as Ghana’s toughest assignment at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although many fans have tipped England and Croatia as the biggest threats in the group, Kingston believes the real danger lies elsewhere. Speaking to Graphic Sports, the former midfielder insisted that Panama should not be taken lightly.
“We know our opponents very well, apart from Panama,” he said. “I think we are very much aware of England and Croatia because we see them play every week. But a lot of people are writing off Panama. For me, that is the most important opponent.”
Kingston explained that unfamiliarity with the Central American side could work in their favour, making them unpredictable and difficult to prepare for.
“The Panama team are players that we are unaware of,” he added. “They will be a thorn in our flesh. I know most people see them as the underdogs, but I think they will be the most difficult match.”
Ghana will begin their campaign at the FIFA World Cup, to be staged in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a clash against Panama on June 17. The Black Stars will then face England on June 23 before wrapping up the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
