Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has praised the increasing acknowledgement of sports as a strategic driver of economic growth following engagements at the Presidential Dialogue with the private sector in Accra.
The high-level forum, hosted at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City and led by John Dramani Mahama, brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on Ghana’s economic direction. According to the Minister, the deliberate spotlight placed on sports during the discussions reflects a significant policy shift.
He observed that for years, sport has largely been treated as a social activity rather than an economic asset.
However, its integration into national economic discourse signals a growing appreciation of its potential to stimulate investment, boost tourism, create employment opportunities for the youth and enhance Ghana’s global profile.
Mr Adams highlighted the proposed Ghana Sports Fund as a concrete demonstration of government’s commitment to structured and sustainable financing for the sector.
He explained that such an initiative would not only support athlete development but also strengthen sports-related businesses and infrastructure.
The Minister further stressed that aligning sport with broader economic objectives could open new avenues for private sector participation, innovation and long-term revenue generation.
Expressing optimism about the way forward, he underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between government institutions and private investors to fully harness the economic benefits embedded within Ghana’s sports industry.
