Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto De Zerbi has admitted that Mohammed Kudus was a key part of his tactical plans as the club battles to avoid relegation in the Premier League.
The Ghana international has suffered a setback in his recovery from a long-term injury that has sidelined him since January, dealing a major blow to De Zerbi’s plans.
Speaking ahead of his debut match against Sunderland, the Italian manager expressed frustration at losing a player he viewed as central to his attacking setup.
“Kudus was in my head a crucial player, especially for the position, but we have to look forward anyway,” De Zerbi said.
Recently appointed to guide Spurs away from the drop zone, the manager had intended to build his fluid, possession-based system around Kudus’ ability to drive play from midfield into attack.
He highlighted the 25-year-old’s versatility, describing him as the ideal link in transitioning the team’s style. However, with Kudus now facing a potential surgery and an extended spell on the sidelines, attention has shifted to the available squad.
“I think we have a lot of very good attackers and we have to help them, to put them in the best condition to show their qualities,” he added.
With concerns growing over Kudus fitness ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Spurs will now have to adapt quickly as they fight to secure their Premier League status.
