No Rush” – George Afriyie Urges GFA to Take Time in Appointing New Coach

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, has urged the association to remain calm and strategic in its search for a new head coach for the Ghana national team.

His comments come in the wake of the FA’s decision to part ways with Otto Addo following a disappointing run of results.

Addo’s exit was confirmed after Ghana suffered back-to-back defeats in their pre-World Cup friendlies, losing heavily to the Austria national team and narrowly to the Germany national team.

Despite the urgency surrounding preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Afriyie cautioned against making a hasty appointment.

“There should be no rush to appoint a new coach,” he said.
“The FA must carry out broader consultations and appoint a good coach not just for the World Cup, but also for a long-term project beyond it.”

He emphasized the importance of building a sustainable team rather than focusing solely on short-term results.

With the Black Stars set to regroup in May for friendlies against Mexico and Wales, the GFA faces mounting pressure to find the right candidate to lead the team into the global tournament.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside the Panama national football team, England national football team, and the Croatia national football team as they prepare for their fifth World Cup appearance.

Afriyie’s message is clear: the next appointment must go beyond immediate results and focus on long-term stability and success for Ghanaian football.
