Carlos Queiroz will remain in charge of the Black Stars after reaching an agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to continue as head coach beyond the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Portuguese coach was initially appointed in April on a four-month contract as a temporary replacement for Otto Addo. His deal expired after Ghana’s World Cup campaign, but discussions involving the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and Queiroz have now resulted in an extension.
Queiroz expressed his pride at continuing to lead Ghana, describing the position as both an honour and a responsibility. He believes the next major objective is to use the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as the foundation for building a stronger Black Stars team ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
“It is with immense pride and honour that I confirm my continuation as Head Coach of the Black Stars of Ghana,” Queiroz said. “The Africa Cup of Nations is much more than our next destination — it is the golden gateway to building the Black Stars that will shine and proudly compete at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.”
Queiroz guided Ghana to the knockout stage at the 2026 World Cup after a win over Panama, a draw with England and a defeat to Croatia. Their campaign ended with a 1-0 loss to Colombia in the Round of 32.
The experienced 73-year-old has previously managed Portugal, Iran, South Africa and Colombia and also worked as an assistant at Manchester United and Real Madrid. His first major task in his extended tenure will be Ghana’s September AFCON qualifiers against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.
The exact length and terms of his new agreement have yet to be made public.
