Former Asante Kotoko captain Samba O’Neil is on the verge of completing a move to South African Premiership side Sekhukhune United after reaching an agreement with the club.
The Niger international is expected to join the Babina Noko outfit on a two-year contract, with the deal set to be finalized following the current international break.
O’Neil departs Kumasi after a standout campaign in which he emerged as one of Kotoko’s most reliable performers. The experienced defender played a key role for the Porcupine Warriors during the 2025/26 season, making 34 appearances in all competitions and remarkably contributing six goals from defence.
His influence extended beyond his performances on the pitch, with the centre-back also entrusted with the captaincy role during the season. His leadership and consistency made him a vital figure in Kotoko’s squad despite the club enduring a difficult campaign.
The move represents a significant step forward in O’Neil’s career as he prepares to test himself in South Africa’s top flight, a league widely regarded as one of the most competitive on the continent.
Although born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, O’Neil represents Niger at international level after switching his allegiance. He is currently with the Menas national team ahead of upcoming international fixtures against Benin and Mauritania.
Sekhukhune United have continued to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season, and the arrival of O’Neil is expected to add experience, leadership and defensive quality to the club’s ranks.
For Kotoko, the departure of one of their key leaders will leave a significant void, while O’Neil now looks ahead to a fresh challenge in South African football after making a lasting impact in the Ghana Premier League.
