Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin believes Ghana could benefit significantly from closer collaboration with Sunderland AFC, particularly in youth development and women’s football.
Bagbin made the remarks during a meeting with a Sunderland delegation led by owner and chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus in Accra.
The Speaker welcomed the growing relationship between Ghana and the English Premier League club, describing it as an opportunity that extends beyond football.
“This visit goes beyond football. There are several opportunities for collaboration and engagement in other sectors of the economy,” Bagbin said.
Sunderland Commercial Manager Scott McCubbin also highlighted the potential benefits of the partnership, noting that youth football development and the growth of the women’s game could become key areas of cooperation between both parties.
Bagbin expressed optimism that future engagements would contribute positively to football development in Ghana while also supporting the continued growth of the Democracy Cup competition.
As a gesture of goodwill and cultural exchange, the Speaker presented traditional fugu attire to members of the Sunderland delegation at the conclusion of the meeting.
The visit is expected to pave the way for further discussions aimed at strengthening sporting, educational and business links between Ghana and Sunderland AFC.
