Interim head coach Prince Yaw Owusu has expressed his delight after steering Asante Kotoko to a crucial 2-0 victory over Young Apostles FC on the road.
The Porcupine Warriors arrived in Wenchi with a point to prove following their 1-0 setback against rivals Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium, a defeat that dented their push near the top of the table.
But Kotoko showed resilience at the Wenchi Stadium, delivering a composed performance that yielded two second-half goals. Strikes from Johnson Oppong Owusu and Samba O’Neil ensured all three points returned to Kumasi.
Speaking after the final whistle, Owusu described the triumph as a defining moment in his short spell in charge.
“This result is very important to me personally,” he said. “It’s my first win in charge, and it gives people a clearer idea of what I’m capable of doing with this team.”
The coach acknowledged that both he and his players had felt the weight of expectation following the derby loss, but revealed that internal discussions helped steady the group.
“There was definitely pressure after the last game. The players knew it, and we addressed it together. We asked them to stay focused on our approach and not be distracted by outside noise,” he explained. “They responded positively. Once we got the goals, our confidence grew and the performance became more fluid.”
The victory lifts Kotoko into fourth position with 38 points, strengthening their bid to stay in the title conversation. They will now shift attention to their Matchday 24 fixture against Vision FC at the Baba Yara Stadium as they aim to build momentum.
