“We Have Options” – Sheikh Tophic Sienu on Mexico Friendly Uncertainty

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is weighing alternative plans should the Black Stars’ proposed international friendly against Mexico fail to take place.

Ghana had lined up a preparatory match against Mexico in North America as part of its build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although the exact date for the encounter is yet to be confirmed.

The fixture, however, has been thrown into uncertainty following recent security concerns in Mexico. Reports indicate that violent clashes linked to cartel activity near Guadalajara led to the deaths of at least 74 people, raising safety questions ahead of the planned match.

GFA Senior Communications Manager Sheikh Tophic Abdul-Kadir Sienu says the association has contingency measures in place.

Speaking on The Arena on Woezor TV, he explained that financial and logistical considerations are still being finalised.

“Certainly, and that is why when budget items are being picked and discussed, it becomes a bit awkward because it is a budget and it has not been approved,” Sienu said.

He emphasised that while the Mexico friendly remains part of Ghana’s preparations, the FA is not solely dependent on that fixture.

“We have planned to play against Mexico, but certainly, we have options. In case the Mexico friendly does not happen, but certainly we have options that, in case the Mexico game does not happen, other teams will be considered, and it is all in preparations towards the World Cup,” he added.

Mexico, popularly known as El Tri, will co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada from June 11 to July 19.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars are also scheduled to engage Austria and Germany next month in additional friendly matches as part of their broader tournament build-up.
